What is the Canada Training Credit?
The Canada Training Credit (CTC) is a refundable tax credit for eligible tuition and other fees paid for courses taken in the tax year. The credits can also be accumulated over time and can be used later.
Training credits are financial aid provided to students enrolled in post-secondary education. It can pay for tuition, textbooks, and other educational expenses. If you’re studying or enrolled in training programs in Canada, you might qualify for the CTC.
Am I eligible for the Canada Training Credit?
The Canadian government has laid down specific eligibility requirements for the CTC, stated below:
- You should be a resident of Canada throughout the year.
- You have to be at least 26 years old and less than 66 years old.
- You should be filing your tax returns.
- Your Canada Training Credit Limit (CTCL) should be greater than zero for the year.
- You should have paid tuition or other covered fees to an eligible educational institution in Canada. These institutes also include certain professional exam bodies and occupational and trade bodies.
- The tuition and other fees should be eligible for the training tax credit.
- Your annual working income should be at least CAD$10,000. This includes your maternity and parental benefits.
- Your annual income should not exceed CAD$173,205 for 2024.
What is the Canada Training Credit Limit (CTCL)?
The Canada Training Credit Limit (CTCL) is the maximum amount an individual can claim in a given year to offset training expenses. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can get up to CAD$250 added to your credit each year, up to a lifetime maximum of CAD$5,000.
When you claim the CTC, the amount will be based on 50% of the eligible tuition and other fees paid to an eligible educational institution or your total CTCL for the year, whichever is less.
Where do I find my CTCL?
Your CTCL will be shown on your latest notice of assessment (NOA). You can access copies of all your Notices of Assessment (NOAs) for past tax years through your MyAccount with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
You can also directly contact the CRA regarding this.
